Depression belongs to the third group, supplanting the two conditions taken in tandem. Certainly, a decision on the terminology to be used throughout the present study is imperious.

Timaeus advances the reasons, modes, and order of creation—or rather of the second beginning, chronologically. God creates the universe out of the four natures of fire, water, air, and earth by infusing measure and order into them; he gives the soul intelligence and seven distinctive qualities; out of these ingredients, he fashions the heavens: first the fixed stars, then the seven moving stars or planets (the Greek term planetai means “wanderers”). The whole universe emerges as a perfect living animal, one and solitary, spherical, moving perpetually with a circular motion.

Chapter 8, “Psychic Pathos, Creativity, and Insight”: Ludwig Binswanger bases his theory of melancholy as a sui generis creative self-therapeutic on Edmund Husserl’s phenomenology of the triadic self. Karl Jaspers interprets the condition as a boundary situation that provides access into the abysmal territory of the psyche, thus explaining profound insight, both artistic and religious. Binswanger and Jaspers emphasize the creative dimension of the melancholic self. Chapter 9, “Postmodern Depression and Apocalypse”: This chapter introduces Thomas Altizer’s recent theological reflections on the final act of the death of God and corresponding depression in late modernity.
